 Balsam Fir

(Abies balsamea)[Balsam Fir]What makes a fir, a fir? Notice the balsam fir's cones standing straight up on top of the branch. This is a sign of a "true" fir, and completely opposite of the cones you see hanging down on most other conifers. These cones are a unique purple-green color and grow from 2-4 inches long. After the first year, the cones mature and the seeds ripen. Then, both the seed and the scales of the cone drop to the ground leaving a pencil-like center standing on the branch like a spike. Historians think that this spike when snow-covered inspired the Germanic people to decorate trees with candles or lights. Evergreens also inspired the Yuletide song "O Tannenbaum" (O Christmas Tree).

The balsam fir is found in forests in the northern half of Wisconsin, usually growing with white spruce in cool, moist, or shaded places. Balsam fir trees are medium sized, standing about 40-60 feet with a trunk diameter of 1-2 feet. Look for bark that is thin, smooth and grayish, marked by blisters filled with resin or balsam pitch. The "leaves" are needle-like and flat, this is one sign it's a fir. The needle-leaves are dark green on top and have silvery white bands underneath. Leaves measure ½ to 1 inch with rounded points and are twisted, arranged in what looks like two rows.
Balsam Fir
Balsams are used by people for many products, especially holiday trees. They are also used for pulp to make paper products. The resins from the pitch blisters on the bark is called "Canada Balsam" and is used as a clear cement for glass in optical instruments and microscope slides.

Botanical Name

Family Pinaceae, Abies balsamea,
Common NamesCanadian Balsam, Canada Balsam
Description:  Native to North America, the Balsam Fir is a conical evergreen tree growing to 180 feet, producing aromatic needlelike leaves and purple fir cones. In the eastern US, it is used mainly as a "Christmas tree", and has long been commercially exploited for its timber. It is the source of the liquid resin called Canada balsam, which is tapped from sixty to eighty-year-old trees in the spring.
History:   Dr. Wooster Beech (1794-1868), founder of the Eclectic healing movement, regarded balsam fir as a stimulant and laxative when taken internally and as an emollient and coolant when used externally.  It has an extensive history of medicinal use in North America and Europe for congestion and other infections, but not used much today. It was used mainly by Native Americans and early settlers for a wide variety of conditions.
Key Actionsantiseptic coolant decongestant emollient laxative stimulantKey Components:  liquid oleo-resinMedicinal Parts:  Needles, resin, roots, branches, barkTraditional Uses:  The resin was used in a variety of ways by Native Americans. Tthe Penobscots put it on burns, cuts, and sores. Ointments and plasters were also applied to the chest and back for colds and chest problems. It not only makes an effective treatment, but also is a protective coating, especially for cuts and burns.
Many tribes including the Algonquin, Woodlands Cree, Iroquois, Menominee, Micmac, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi treated colds with a tea made from the sap or bark.
The Pillagers and Ojibwa used the aromatic needles in their sweat lodges, inhaling the smoke from burning leaves to cure such respiratory problems as bronchitis.

NATURALLY REMOVE YOUR BLOOD CLOTS & MORE

Natural Blood Clot Treatment

Whatever the causes of the blood clot, it can typically be treated naturally. Common blood clot treatment ranges from taking supplements to making simple lifestyle changes. A tonic of diluted apple cider vinegar, regular dosage of 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses, and increased consumption of cayenne up to 3 teaspoons 6 days a week are all effective natural treatments. Supplementing the diet with ginger and sassafras has also been supported as a method for dissolving blood clots. Adding additional physical activity, such as walking, to a daily routine is an additional healthy lifestyle change that should help remedy blood clots.  Typically a natural lifesaving mechanism, a blood clot forms in a healthy individual to stop the flow of the blood from a wound or a cut. However, blood clots can also form abnormally, which in turn can cause additional health conditions and complications. This type of dangerous blood clot can form in several different locations of the body as a result of various different causes. The actual formulation of a blood clot happens in response to a certain series of events. The blood typically flows freely throughout the body; however, when it is exposed to certain thrombogenic substances, it begins to form a thrombus or clot. Initially, a platelet plug is formed followed by chemical reactions that grow the clot.  Blood clots may form in several different locations in the body ranging from the legs to the lungs, brain, and heart. Several factors and conditions can cause blood clots. The most common causes of blood clots include arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, consumption of certain medications, family history of blood clots, obesity, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or bed rest, smoking, and surgery. Several more serious conditions often result from blood clots. Common conditions caused by blood clots include deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

[YEA]  06/14/2013: Desmond from Chicago, Il: "I had a swelling in my right calf that was throbbing and it felt like needles or it felt like a balloon filled with water ready to explode and it was extremely hot to touch. I went to my clinic and was informed that I'd have to return the following week and see a Specialist. The appointment was made and I went home.
Had phoned my sister-in-law in Donegal, Ireland and told her as I was starting to worry at this point with no relief and she told me to get some Molasses and taking 2 tablespoons daily and it will make it disappear!
Sunday evening when I got home I took 2 tablespoon fulls, repeated it Monday morning and night, same Tuesday and Wednesday too and took another on Thursday morning.
Went to my appointment on Thursday afternoon and was asked to roll up my pants and the Specialist looked at my chart and then to both my legs and back and forth and then he says to me, "Which leg is the affected one?" and told him that I was not sure as it was his opinion that I wanted to hear and then his words were: "You're wasting both my time and your own..." that I had no blood clot and to get out of here and be thankful.
I knew it was the Molasses that cured me and I've been telling that story to everyone except the medical staff. For they would never believe me!
Thanks,
Desmond Campbell"

It just kept swelling and it was red. We had just watched Dr. Oz the day before, and he told of the symptoms of a blood clot. It was scary.
I am not one to run to the doctor for just what ever. But I thought well now I have to go. Did not expect to find any help for a blood clot. OK, Blackstrap molasses, really .I went straight to the grocery store (I brought my Tblsp) with me. Took it before I left the parking lot .I was desperate. It has been a week now. And the clot seems to be gone.I took 2 tbls a day mixed in 6oz. of milk. I plan to keep taking it. Maybe not as much, but it seems to be a healthy addition to anyones diet. I used the Brer Rabbit brand because the lable showed to have more iron and magnesium than the grandmas brand. Hope this helps someone."
11/18/2013: Prioris from Fl replies: "There is already an optimal healthy supplement for blood clots - fibrolytic enzymes e.g. nattokinase (clot buster). Given that it could be a life or death issue, I would recommend that people retire molasses and other treatments to the dustbin as a treatment unless they can't get access to the enzyme."

I am currently on 12mg of Warfarin for a Trombal vein blood clot and want to switch to Nattokinase asap but need to know the dosage to take?? Thanks in advance for the info.

The following info I copied from Wikkipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nattokinase
Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted and purified from a Japanese food called Natto. Natto is a cheese-like food made from fermented soybeans that has been eaten in Japan for many years. It is thought by some to be a valuable tool in minimizing the chances of developing heart and vascular diseases. Natto is produced by fermentation by adding the bacterium Bacillus natto, a beneficial bacteria, to boiled soybeans. The resulting nattokinase enzyme is produced when the bacterium acts on the soybeans. While other soy foods contain enzymes, it is only the natto preparation that contains the specific nattokinase enzyme. Nattokinase is valued in the alternative medicine community as a clot-buster and blood thinner, and is sometimes recommended as a substitute for daily aspirin therapy. But it's effects go beyond that in terms of catalyzing other enzyme activity."

I suffered different ailments..and it always come to the doctor see the cure and take the medicines. But still it takes a while before the our body relieves. I use this internet to see what is best on my ailments. I found this Organic ACv. i try to use it last 2008. and until now it does really works with me. Every time i am not feeling well, I used 1 tbsp of acv diluted with a glass of water3x a day before meal. It does really works with me. Good advise try it and you will see the difference with your body!!heaps of people relieves thru this .Try now! Use straw to drink it!!"

[YEA]  05/07/2009: Jon from Birmingham, Alabama: "I am a wellness coach and I tell everybody about the healing benefits of ACV. Many people have tried it with great results. One thing is that everyone is different. Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural detoxifier. I know first hand it cured my skin condition taking 2 teaspoons in 10 ounces of water twice a day. I have experienced all the similar benefits that everyone else has. I had an overactive liver and now I don't!! That is the most impressive benefit for me! Why, because I was toxic and it did take a while, but by continuing to use it I experienced the full benefit I could. No more sever cold or Flu.I hardly ever feel bad. ACV balances out the ph in your body and when that is balanced your body begins it's natural processes for healing itself. Like anything else it is not really the best tasting tonic but it doesn't follow with the label.
Side Effects, could fall asleep, could feel extreme pain, you may feel lost or suddenly confused, so far to date the worst side effect I have heard is if you are extremely toxic, you could experience a major breakout in your skin. So always start out with a low dosage and work up to the recommended dose as your body can handle.I have seen people get rid of shingles, lower there blood pressure, get rid of mild to severe acne, blood sugars balance out in diabetics, prostate problems go away, finger nails grew stronger, taste become more enhanced, wartz gone, athletes foot gone, stomach ulcers dissipate, cleans out your colon, helps prevent edema, more and more.I would only recommend talking with your doctor first if you are taking medications. Do some research on your issues and if taking ACV in some way shape or form could help you. Another thing is your kidneys filter 200 quarts of blood in 24 hours. The kidney play major roles in blood pressure and supports the health of many other organs. So when your urinating a bunch, you generally are doing something right. I hope I helped inform some people on how the body works and how ACV help aid the body."

[YEA]  04/08/2009: Rob from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand: "Hi there, I have just come across your great site and have now saved it to my favourites for ready access as and when required.
I have been using apple cider vinegar for over eight years after breaking both my clacaneous (heel bones) in a fall from a miltary assault case on a proferssional training exercise at a work conference. I was referred to it by a Reiki healer who felt it would assist me deal with the ongoing pain issues and also felt it would be a good de tox for the body.

It certainly did that with ny body reacting initially with a lot of small boil type infections manifesting as the apple cider vinegar in the body forced the toxins out through the skin. That lasted for 2 months and then my body cleared and I felt a whole lot better as a result - and continue to do so.

I am confident that ACV has assisted me to reduce the effects of living with constant pain and has so many other added values as the amino acids and enzymes produced in the fermentation process act as catalysts to help the body break down and rebuild molecules on a daily basis.

I swear by the natural benefits of ACV in so many ways and it is now part of my daily routine of getting up in the morning and pouring 25mm + into the bottom of glass and filling with warm water and a touch of sea salt. I follow this with a further 4 to 5 glases of water and this is a great way to start the day. I also try to have a shot before my meals when practical to do so.

If i go on a road trip I fill my water bottle with a dose of ACV and couple of pinches of sea salt as well.

Here is another good tip for you -Try filling a spray bottle with one third ACV and balance wityh water and spray onto your hair and skin on a daily basis after shampooing while showering. Just wait for the positive comments from your hairdresser and your skin feels nice and soft as a result. My hair is rejuvinated and definitely feels thicker as a result of using ACV.

So I am a believer and any natural product that contains essential minerals and trace elements present in ACV such as calcium, boron, magnesium, silicon, manganese and potassium has to have a positive effect on ones metabolism.

Another tip for liver spots on the skin ( hands and face in particular) as aging kicks in is to dip half a lemon into a bowl filled with ACV and let soak for short while as absorption occurs. Then rub on liver- spotted skin daily and watch spots begin to fade in a few weeks.

[YEA]  04/17/2009: Shel from Eugene, OR: "I wrote previously to say how impressed I was with oil-pulling. Now I want to sing the praises of ACV. I'm a type O (blood), have never liked sour things and have always avoided vinegar. I recently reread my book and realized that ACV was approved for me. I have a lot of issues--candida, herpes, psoriasis and they have all been improved by taking ACV. My face was seriously broken out with psoriasis, a week ago, and I began applying ACV morning and night and drinking it several times a day in juice, water, whatever. My face is now completely cleared up. I also have a yeast rash almost all the time, from too much sugar, etc. That completely cleared up, too, also with topical application. I also applied it topically to a herpes site that was beginning to tingle and that went away, too. No constipation or bad side effects of any kind.

What I would like to point out is that everybody cannot expect to have the same results. That's the beauty of this site and the variety of experiences and remedies available. My other point is that attitude is everything. I never try things with the mindset that it "probably won't work"--why should it not? Sometimes, it's just a case of not having run across the right thing for you. However, people are often loth to admit the psychological aspects of illnesses and many people's specific illnesses are a huge clue about their lives, attitudes and personalities. I think the number one factor in getting well is the willingness to let go of whatever is wrong with you. Many people are dependent on their illnesses without realizing it and a frightening number of people are unwilling to do anything to help themselves. Maybe you will find these comments unappropriate for this website but I think they're valid and my hat is off to the people who organized this website and the people who write in, who have had the courage to try things and thereby help themselves and others. Finally, it is true that there is a period of adjustment before you really see a big change with any natural therapy. Never give up if results aren't immediate--unless, of course, something really drastic happens. I had a few really discouraging days but now I feel better than I have in as long as I can remember (I'm 65 years old.)"

[YEA]  06/01/2007: Karenna from SF, CA: "Cayenne is NOT unsafe per one of your feedback customers. I recently found your website in some research I am doing on Cayenne and Lymph, but was a little disconcerted to see that you published someone's testimonial warning others not to use cayenne if they do not want their blood thinned.
Cayenne is used in midwifery and in other instances when needed to stop hemorrhaging, and has the ability to correct and balance both ends of many circulation issues. It will assist in dissolving clots as well as stopping bleeding, and it will -- over time -- correct both high and low blood pressure.
I suggest to all readers that when it comes to benefits and contraindications of herbs and medications, that they exhaustive research, or at least more than they think is necessary, to discover what they need to know for their particular situation or those for whom they are caring."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  01/20/2011: Jarret from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "I've been following earth clinic for a couple years now. Every couple weeks to a month I have been getting pains which seem to come directly from the center of my heart. I dissolve 2 90,000 heat unit cayennes into a glass a water and bear the burn, but it seems the clot which was causing so much pain gets past my heart and it stops hurting. I haven't been able to take lots of cayenne everyday tho so I don't know if it will permanently fix this problem but it has done the trick several times over... I was even having pain in my left arm today and was worried I might end up with a heart attack if I didn't do something.
Cayenne also works awesome for cuts... burns pretty bad at first but gives a nice heal with no scar for the couple times I've used it on myself and others but these were minor wounds, so I can't say how well it would work for something severe."
01/21/2011: Tara from South Hadley, Ma, Usa replies: "That's great feedback Jarret, thanks. I wonder if in an emergency you could apply cayenne over the heart in a diluted solution of DMSO, which would penetrate immediately? Does anyone have any thoughts about that? Thanks."
01/21/2011: Blanche from Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Usa replies: "Jarret, reading these symptoms, I think if I were you I would go to a doctor to at least know what you are dealing with. It may not be wise to try to treat this with home remedies. Good luck to you."
01/22/2011: Lemarque from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia replies: "Hi Jarret, I would strongly suggest that you go to your doctor and get this problem looked at ASAP. You describe the "clot" as "passing", but it is very unusual for this to occur. Circulating clots will almost always lodge in the lungs (PE) before they reach the heart. Clots in the coronary arteries means heart attack 100% of the time - no exceptions.
However from the symptoms you describe it is more likely going to be coronary artery sclerosis or angina. The extent of this condition needs to be assessed as it seems you are already getting warning signs. It is always better to get these things checked, if there is a serious underlying problem, get the issue addressed and then return to natural health approaches as a preventative measure for the future. If the tests show nothing is wrong with your heart, then that is the best outcome and you can then direct your attention to finding a way to treat the condition not just the symptoms. I truly hope you take heed of this advice."
02/02/2011: Jarret from Calgary, Alberta replies: "Thanks for all the concern guys.
Tara, I think the best and quickest way for it to be effective is to put it in hot/warm water and drink. I don't really know what dmso is tho.. but I would think if you put it inside your body it will get into your blood and dilate your arteries much more directly than it could ever possibly do through your skin.

For the past weeks I have kept taking a tsp of cayenne (pills got expensive) in a glass of hot water at least 3x a day... It has provided a great deal of relief, but I am aware that this isn't a cure all. Lemarque I too suspect arterial sclerosis.. And by how badly my legs have scaled over I am severly depleted in good fats, however I did get a basic hepatology screening and everything came back normal (ie ldl) I would contribute the current condition to about 15 years of eating a high salt fast food diet. Another added benefit of taking this cayenne has been that the top of my head on my baldy spot has been warm again after being cold for a very long time. No sprouts yet tho :) I could feel the clots in different areas of my body as well. It got stuck in my arm, my heart, my lung, and what felt like the frontol lobe of my brain... But everytime I just kept taking the cayenne until it passed. I haven't felt it for a week or so but am still taking the cayenne to be safe. I have also started eating flax seeds (mulling them to a pulp) (and this is for omega3/ALA) everyday and while it's only been a few days of it I am feeling way better."
06/17/2011: John from Bridgeton, New Jersey replies: "Lemarque is absolutely correct. I am 43 and just got released from the hospital with my 4th MI (Heart attack) in 2 years. In that time I have suffered DVT's, PE's and ultimately the MI's. I have a severe lotting issue that to dat, has only been managed through a host of medications. If I miss 4 days (seems to be the magic number), I am destined for another MI. I have been given two additional medications to control the sickness the other ones cause, so as of today I am taking 9 pills a day. Clots are NOTHING to play around with. I must be the luckiest guy in the world to survive so many MI's in such a short period, but even I know how soon that could end.
Personally I would love to explore the possibility of organic treatment, but having gone through what I have gone through, I wouldn't dare do anything without the direct guidance of my doctors at this point. The consequences are far too extreme!
I would love to hear some thoughts on organic alternatives since I am now retired from my law enforcement career and have all the time in the world to do some research! :-)

Is it mixed with food or water. Is there a certain way to use it to address one ailment over another? I have pain on the inside of my leg that seems to be slowly moving upward that I suspect is a clot. I don't know but it has been moving up my left leg for a very long time and is now in the thigh area. I work from home and sit most of the time with my right ankle crossed over my left leg at the knee. Thank you!"
07/11/2013: Kt from The Usa replies: "Hi Terri, I just happened to read your post and thought I had been experiencing the same thing with one of my legs. I had read some benefits from taking cayenne pepper so I had started to use it on my eggs and vegetables along with turmeric and ginger. I don't know whether it is the combination or not but since I have been taking it I have not had that "feeling" in my leg. In fact, I had not given it another thought until I read your post. Just thought I'd share."
07/18/2013: Kt from The USA replies: "I wanted to report an update. I awoke this AM with pain in the leg in which I suspect a clot. I mixed about 1/2 tsp cayenne in some warm water and chugged it. After that, I took about 1/4 tsp turmeric and 1/4 tsp ginger in some warm water and chugged that. I then mixed about a TBSP of BSM in some warm water and drank that. I went for a ten minute walk. When I returned I ate about 1/2 C cooked carrots and a garlic clove. I don't know which combination worked or if they will counter each other later but the "tightness" in that leg has gone for right now although I can still feel a little disturbance.
Can anyone provide a warning about what I took? Sometimes, when you're in the pain I was in, you don't think too clear. I know the turmeric and ginger are from roots. I guess you can consider those a starch. I know too many carbs (starches) clog pores and veins. (BTW, a popular medical site locked me out of my account for reporting something they apparently didn't like until I begged for reinstatement and pleaded ignorance due to my brain injuries---which is true). During my times of employment I stood the majority of the time. I was never one to sit for long periods of time until getting the computer but I've had to cut back on that. I rode horses for several years but that is not idle sitting."
07/19/2013: Andrea C from Cardiff, Wales replies: "Take half a teaspoon of cayenne in the morning, other half in the evening..... In WARM WATER. So your body knows what's coming. It may feel a bit burny, but that will pass."
07/20/2013: Kt from The Usa replies: "Hi Andrea, should I take it on an empty stomach or after I eat?"
07/21/2013: Andrea C from Cardiff, Wales replies: "You can take it with or without food. You can also put it on your food, but I do both as I like it. Love Andrea xxx"

Sassafras

06/08/2013: Bluemoonrising from Hamilton, On, Canada: "My partner has deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in both legs and restricted flow in the aorta below the the renal artery. Doctors want to do an invasive procedure of graphing in a new aorta with branches to be attache in both legs below the blockages. We are not wanting this proceedure. The left leg DVT has been there for more than 10 years with 2 pulmonary embolisms and since then only an occasional flair up. 2 years ago due to a physical injury a blood clot formed in the right leg. Emergency surgery was on the table, but the thrombosis specialist stopped in as it was discovered there was a clot just outside the vena cava and not being stabilized it could move during surgery. He has been on daily self-injections of Fragmin for the last 40 months. Couple of questions. Should he stop the Fragmin if he starts any of the remedies I have read... Cayenne & Garlic... Nattokinase... Honey Cayenne Vinegar... Lemon & Baking soda water. Also, has anyone heard of a STRONG tea of Sassafras - 1time - should be dark orange in colour strong.... And whether it has any effect. Supposed to clean out the pipes of plaque and clots. Haven't tried it yet. Told to stop Fragmin for that day because too much thiner. That is why I am asking if Fragmin should be stopped when trying these others."

However, to be on the safe side, you may want to work with a naturopath who can monitor your husband while he takes alternative remedies just in case they interfere with his anticoagulant. You could ask the naturopath about taking high-quality serrapeptase or other systemic enzymes (you may want to do an Interent search on systemic enzymes and deep vein thrombosis).
